HS Summer Reading: Summer 2025

Use this guide for SFS high school summer reading ideas and inspiration!

Why summer reading?

Summer is an excellent time to READ. Not for a class, not for an assignment, but just read to enjoy it!

Studies show that reading over summer vacation keeps kids' brains active and reduces setbacks in reading levels, known as the "Summer Slide". Source

Have a look at the following suggestions here in the Libguide. None of this is required reading, just suggestions for something great to read during the summer. Enjoy! Mrs. Elliott

What is the New York Times reading contest?

"All you have to do to participate is tell us what you’re reading, watching or listening to in The New York Times and why. Students can enter by submitting a short written response — or they can make a video up to 90 seconds long."

  • Any 13- to 19-year-old anywhere in the world is invited to join us

  • Every Friday for 10 weeks beginning on June 6, 2025, we will publish a post asking the same question: “What got your attention in The Times this week?”

  • Submit your response any time until the following Friday at 9 a.m. Eastern, when we will close that post and open a new one that asks the same question.

  • You can choose anything you like that was published in the print paper or on nytimes.com in 2025, including articles, Opinion and guest essaysvideosgraphics, photos and podcasts. To see the variety of topics winners have responded to over the years, read this column.

  • You can participate any or every week, but we only allow one submission per person per week

  • Responses must be 1,500 characters (250 words) or fewer, OR a 90 second video

  • Provide the complete URL or headline of the article you choose
