Citations in your writing: Some RULES

  • You must refer to images, figures or tables that you include in your work
  • You have to source the image in the same way you source information
  • You will include in-text citations for the images when you reference them in your writing
  • Your images will be fully cited in your works cited list or you can create a separate image list (if you cite MANY images, this may be more organized)

Citing Tables/Graphs

  • Label with number, title the graph or table, then in-text citation Example: Graph 1: title, (in-text citation). 
  • Full citation is also included in the works cited list

Citing Student Created Tables/Graphs

  • Assign the table a number, then include the title of table Example: Table 2: Title (in-text citation).
  • If student created, say this and include the sources (Student created. Adapted from: in-text, in-text). 
  • The full citations for all sources are included in the works cited list 
  • Refer to the table/graph in your writing using the number (Table 2) 

Citing Images

  • In-text citation is listed below the image. Example: Image 1: title (in-text) 
  • Full citation is also included in works cited list 
  • You can reference the image within your writing using the number (Image 1) 

Citing Images in Slides

  • Label the image with a number (Image 1) 
  • In-text citation is below the image
  • Full citation is included on a Works Cited List or Image List 
  • Works cited list is in alphabetical order, Image List is in order of appearance (Image 1, Image 2...)
